Question

What causes the aurora borealis?

Answer

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is caused by charged particles from the Sun hitting Earth’s magnetic field. These particles collide with atmospheric gases like nitrogen and oxygen, exciting them and causing them to emit light in various colors, typically green, purple, or red.
